Family business: The Amerification of America

It’s no secret. Demographics skew white in Central and north Florida. In Okahumpka, FL there’s a Shell gas station run by a family of three. The quintessential America dream. I bought a Sprite and Pepto Bismol. The quintessential American road trip necessities. When we jump back on the Turnpike, we pass a row of billboards:  “Jesus is The Only Way”,  “Amrit Palace – Authentic Cuisine from India” and “Florida Citrus Center.” A graphic image of this region reveals a changing demographic, one that began before America was America, a subtle re-quilting from one family to the next. In the land of the Timucua.
